Solar Roof Mount Ventilator with Unattached Solar Panel is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Too Early To Tell I bought this as a replacement for a fan with motor brushes. So a main criteria was to have an easily replaceable, commonly available, standard brushless motor. This met that criteria. It's installed and running so my suggestions are: The motor leads are too darn short. As it is, they connect 1 inch into the skirting. That's a very inconvenient location. Ideally they would go into the attic, but that means puncturing your roof to access the solar panel (since it's not attached). The motor leads need to be at least 2" longer. Its laughable to expect this highly-plasticized cord to last 20-30 years (the life expectancy of a roof). This stuff will degrade to dust in 3 years. It needs to be installed in some sort of conduit. I used a piece of old polyethylene sprinkler pipe (the flexible black stuff). It's fine to kit this cord, the instructions should say "put the cord in conduit or you'll be replacing soon" or something to that effect. Also, I used some Spiral-wrap wire containers on other sections of the cord that are in year-round full sun. Back to the motor leads--the housing needs a grommeted exit port so that the cord doesn't exit under the sharp sheet metal. The instructions should list that you may need wire connectors. While providing adequate cord is commendable, the correct installation will not have much excess. A couple of pairs of M/F connectors would be nice. The big plusses for me are: BRUSHLESS MOTOR. I found this or a very similar motor on several industrial supply sites. I'm not worried about having to find some goofy-sized motor brushes every year. It's a fairly standard configuration. Except for not having a grommeted wire port, it fits right in where the old one came out. Easy doughnuts to install. Lots of wire. Good. If you can trim it and install new connectors. The panel allows for additional connections!!! EXCELLENT! I salvaged the panel from my old fan and added it to this one. Now I have a panel for east exposure and another for SSW. (I live at 43 degrees north). My fan now starts hours earlier than before and doesn't have to try to catch up. Wonderful design. The sheet metal work is surprisingly good. It should last my lifetime in this dry part of the world Last word. This unit is only as good as the motor. The motor is only as good as the bearings. Only time will tell. Ventamatic bets that it's last two years. I'm expecting 10. We'll see.
